From Struggle to Strength: Namuddu Martha’s Journey with Edu Call Uganda

In the heart of Mukono, Uganda, lives Namuddu Martha, a determined single mother raising four children on her own. For years, she fought to provide for her family through farming, but her small harvests could never stretch far enough.

"I used to plant and pray for the best," Martha recalls. "But the seeds I could afford were poor quality, and without fertilizer, the harvests were never enough. Many nights I went to bed worried about what my children would eat the next day."

Like thousands of women farmers across Uganda, Martha’s story was shaped by barriers beyond her control: lack of access to quality seeds, limited knowledge on best farming practices, and middlemen who bought her maize at unfair prices.

A New Beginning with Edu Call Uganda

Martha’s turning point came when she was introduced to Edu Call Uganda’s Seed Loan Model.

"At first, I thought it was impossible," she says. "How could I get seeds and fertilizer without paying cash? But Edu Call trusted me. They gave me 10 kilograms of hybrid maize seeds, 50 kilograms of fertilizer, and training on how to farm better."

"It felt like I was no longer farming alone," Martha shares. "I had a team guiding me step by step."

More Than Just Maize

At harvest, Martha returned 100 kilograms of maize as repayment for her seed loan. But for the first time in years, she had a surplus, enough to feed her children and sell in the market.

The maize she and other women farmers grow is processed into Edu Call nutritious maize flour, packed in branded bags that carry their stories and energy.

"When I see Edu Call flour in the shop, I feel proud," she says with a smile. "I know part of that maize came from my sweat. And when someone buys it, they are supporting mothers like me."

A Life Transformed

Thanks to Edu Call, Martha’s life has begun to change in meaningful ways:

  • Her children now eat more balanced meals.

  • She can pay their school fees on time.

  • In her community, she is recognized as a strong, capable farmer.

"Before, I felt invisible," she reflects. "Now, I feel respected. My children look at me with pride because they see what I can do."

Martha’s Message

For Martha, Edu Call Uganda has been more than a farming program, it has been a doorway to dignity and hope.

"Edu Call has given me more than seeds," she says. "They gave me knowledge, strength, and the chance to give my children a better future."

At Edu Call Uganda, we believe every woman farmer deserves the tools, training, and support to thrive. Martha’s story is just one example of how access to seeds, information, and markets can transform lives.
